New guidebooks for 2018

2017 was a particularly busy and challenging year working on three distinct new projects across North Wales. The result is the publication of two guidebooks for walkers, and, for the first time for both myself and Kittiwake, a book for cyclists in a similar user-friendly format. They offer different perpectives on exploring the beautiful landscape of North Wales. I hope you enjoy them.

Walks from the Welsh Highland Railway - The Welsh Highland Railway, running between Caernarfon and Porthmadog, is the longest heritage railway in the U.K. and a major tourist attraction in North Wales. The restored narrow gauge railway, using powerful steam locomotives, offers a spectacular 25 mile journey through the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, past lakes and beneath Snowdon, then through picturesque Beddgelert.

This book provides the opportunity to explore on foot the stunning scenery and history of the varied landscape the railway passes through. It offers 32 circular or linear walks from or between stations, which can be combined with a train ride. Many walks are never far from the railway, sometimes alongside it, offering great views of the steam trains!

Walks to Ancient Hillforts in North Wales – Across the beautiful landscape of North Wales are the evocative remains of many ancient hillforts built by our ancestors mainly during the Iron Age over 2,500 years ago. They were defended by deep ditches and earth or stone ramparts, and probably served different purposes. The larger ones were important settlements providing protection to tribal communities, as well as symbols of power and status.

These 30 walks visit the most dramatic and interesting sites, from the impressive chain of hillforts on the Clwydian Range to more remote and less well known ones elsewhere. They pass through stunning scenery and offer panoramic views. Some overlook the beautiful North Wales coast. Included is a site in Snowdonia celebrated in Welsh folklore, and one of the best preserved hillforts in Britain.

Scenic Cycle Rides North Wales – A book of 32 family friendly, mainly traffic-free, cycling routes exploring the stunning coastal, hill and mountain scenery and history of North Wales. This book incorporates a wide range of existing designated cycle trails. The rides are suitable for all cyclists, including families seeking a safe enjoyable ride with their children, people interested in cycling for fitness purposes, and visitors who wish to include cycling in their itinerary. Some routes are circular and others return the same way, offering different views. Most are hard surfaced and, unless specified, suitable for all bikes. Each ride has a map, route details, key information, including facilities and local bike hire, and usually notes of interest.

David's books are available from local tourist information centres, all good bookshops, outdoor shops and other local outlets which vary from area to area. Alternatively any book can be ordered direct from Kittiwake
